In 2005, a British family bought a small cottage in the village of Bibury. The house was built in the 17th century and looked like a postcard. But inside, it was cold and dark. In 2019, the family decided to make it more comfortable for the winter. Their first idea was to replace the old wooden windows with modern double glazing. However, they soon discovered a problem. Their cottage was a Grade II listed building.
This means the government protects the house because of its historical value. The family could not change the original windows without special permission. If they installed new windows without asking, they would face a fine of up to £20,000. The rules are strict because the government wants to preserve the character of old English villages. Today, the family still lives in the cottage with the original windows. They put on warm jumpers in winter and remember that living in history is not always easy or comfortable.
